Turning Students into Phenomenal STEMist with Maya Byfield

This week’s guest is Dr. Maya Byfield, founder of the Phenomenal STEMist. Through her podcast, Facebook, and one-on-one instruction with students, Maya hopes to get more minority students in STEM by getting parents more involved.

Byfield is a biology professor, and the founder and director of the Phenomenal STEM(ist): The goal of her company is to get more minority students involved in STEM. She has a BS in biology and a minor in Chemistry from Oakwood University, Huntsville, AL, and a PhD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY.

Byfield says most STEM programs are targeted to children. When it comes to getting minority children involved and engaged, it helps to reach out to parents who can make it a priority for their kids. She developed an online classroom that trains parents how to prepare their children in STEM at different levels: beginner (pre-K and 3rd grade; intermediate (4th and 8th grades); and advanced (high school).
