Checking the Research Papers in the News with James and Charlie

This week’s guests are James Rosenthal and Charlie Kelly,, the hosts of the Paper Boys podcast. These graduate students at the University of Washington talk about the academic articles behind the news and how they are covered by the media.

Rosenthal is an electrical engineering PhD student and he studies wireless electronics for biomedical devices such as brain computer interface. Kelly is in the aeronautics and astronautics department at the University of Washington where he studies electric propulsion, plasma physics, and deep space orbiter technologies.

Both Rosenthal and Kelly check headline science news stories and research the paper that the news is based on for their show. Both hosts dive into the journal, get all the references, find out about the authors and the methods behind this research, and relay all of that on our show. They use the information they find to discuss whether the news got the reporting right or wrong.
