Making Fun Physics Videos with Rebecca Fitch
In this episode, we talk to Rebecca Fitch, an engineer with a background in physics who works in different sectors from defense, aerospace, and civil nuclear. Rebecca describes herself as being “keen on STEM activities” and tries to get students more engaged in science by volunteering at schools and doing science presentations. She recently started a physics YouTube channel Science with Bexy where she tries to get students excited about physics.
Her Start in Physics
Rebecca chose to specialize in physics during her A-Levels, something she said was unexpected at the time. While taking some classes, she realized she was doing well and decided to pursue the subject. She discovered that one of the university requirements was A-Level mathematics, which she did not have at the time.
Fortunately, her school said she could join the maths class if she caught up over the Christmas holidays, and she did. She dropped her business studies classes and started pursuing physics.
Rebecca credits her school’s support in her STEM goals (and she never imagined they would have told her no). That support literally changed her life.
STEM Outreach and YouTube channel
Rebecca also takes part in STEM outreach where she works by visiting schools and telling students what she does. She says this helps students see how exciting the field is and the doors it can open for them. Many of the students she talks to are young (in the seven to eleven age range) who are usually excited to see and talk to a female engineer.
Rebecca also started her YouTube channel Science with Bexy. She says there are a lot of really good science YouTube channels out there but most are American and very few from the UK. That is something she hopes to change. She also added that most of those channels are experiment-based. Rebecca hopes to do something more education-centered that will help students understand the concepts they learn in school. If a student is having difficulty understanding nuclear fusion in school, she hopes her video will help them.
